Classroom Management

Classroom Discipline Policy

Children learn best in a structured well disciplined environment, which is supportive and encouraging.  As a group, the students and I will develop our classroom rules and we will post them in the room.  They will be similar to the following rules:

  • I will NOT interfere with other people’s right to learn.  (This includes not interrupting teacher instruction, raising my hand, and keeping hands, feet, and other objects to myself.)

  • I will always try my best!!  (This includes listening, following directions, and taking pride in my work.)

I also use the blue-green-yellow-red light system.  Each child has a clip with his/her name on it.  All students begin the day on “green.”  If a rule is broken (after reminders), the students will move his/her clip to “yellow” and the consequence will be miss half of recess.  If the student continues to not follow classroom rules, his/her clip will be moved to “red” and the consequence will be missing all of recess.

Your child will bring home a conduct calendar inside of his/her Daily Folder each night.  This is my way of communicating your child’s behavior at school.  At the end of each day, the students will circle the date on their calendar to correspond with the color that his/her clip was on for the day.  If a student moves his/her clip to yellow or red, I will write a quick note about what happened.

(Blue Light)- Exceptional day- Moved clip up for being noticed doing something outstanding.

(Green Light)-  Ready to learn- Great day

(Yellow Light)- Oops- Warnings given

(Red Light)- Uh-oh- Many warnings given and needs to make better choices

Please initial your child’s calendar nightly.

Conscious Discipline is another discipline strategy that is used in my classroom.  We will begin to see ourselves as a “Classroom Family” and develop a nurturing, safe, and loving classroom community.  Conscious Discipline, created by Dr. Becky Bailey, is a comprehensive classroom management program and a social-emotional curriculum.  It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices.  I will be sharing more information regarding Conscious Discipline as our school year progresses.
